Valentine’s Day 1

Yamilla sent us this write-up about Valentine’s Day. Thanks, Yamilla!

Valentine’s Day is about love, but love should be an everyday thing. Gifts and red roses are not the only things about Valentine’s Day. Some kids think that Valentine’s Day is about babies shooting love arrows to make one fall in love. The truth is, Valentine’s Day is one big mystery, but there are some great stories about its origin and I would like to share one here.
The history of Valentine’s Day starts with the emperor of Rome banning marriages. The reason – he thought it was distracting his soldiers to perform their army duties. The soldiers became unhappy and shocked about not being able to marry the women they loved. The one man who was most upset was a man named Valentine. He was upset about the fact that the soldiers of Rome couldn’t marry. He thought that if a soldier loved a woman then he should be able to marry that woman. So, Valentine secretly let the soldiers marry even though it was not allowed. Unfortunately, the emperor soon found out about the secret marriages and Valentine was prisoned. While he was in jail, he was asked to cure the jailer’s daughter’s blindness by using his special powers. Afterwards, Valentine and the jailer’s daughter fell in love. Before Valentine was put to death he asked for a pen and paper and wrote a farewell message to his lover and at the bottom he signed, from your Valentine. Valentine was believed to die on February 14th, 270 AD.
