Response to book “Fly Away Home”

Do you ever think you have to move? Think how badly you would have to move if you lived in an airport!Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting is about a 4 year old boy, Andrew living with his father in an airport. You may not feel so happy and fortunate with you 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house (sometimes I honestly feel like that), but Andrew and his dad feel fortunate enough to be living in the airport instead of the streets. (by the way, living in the airport is illegal) Throughout the book Andrew and his dad cling on to the hope of finding an apartment. They learn to never give up.

Even though rents are too high, Andrew’s dad won’t stop looking for an apartment. With his confidence up, rents won’t let him down. Even Andrew in the book says, “I know he’s been calling about an apartment. I know the rents are too high for us.” Andrew also knows that the frustrated look on his dad’s face after coming back from the phone booth means that the day of apartment hunting wasn’t a good one.

Trying to get an apartment isn’t their only worry. Andrew and his dad also have to try not to get noticed in their time at the airport. If they get noticed, they’ll get kicked out of the airport and will have to spend their time on the streets. Even though life is tough, Andrew will try not to give up on his father by trying his hardest not to get noticed. No matter what, Andrew is determined to keep him and his dad in the airport and not on the streets until his dad finds an apartment.

Andrew and his father didn’t give up throughout the book. Rents being too high and the struggles of living in an airport didn’t give them any reason not to hope- just hope that there was a chance they could find a house just perfect for them. The ability to keep going is so important. From now on, I am never going to give up and always think on the bright side.
